Star Wars: 5 Things That Must Happen In The Rise Of Skywalker (& 5 Things That Should Not Happen)

The time has finally come, it is officially the week of release for the final entry to the Skywalker saga of Star Wars, The Rise Of Skywalker. Theories and expectations, excitement and doubt, happiness and sadness, all of these are rife among the fandom as the film fast approaches.

The film has the unique task of finishing up the greatest saga in cinema in a good, concise, and satisfying manner. In order to do this, it has to do certain things to be both a good film and a good Star Wars film in order to appeal to all types of fans, and it also has to avoid certain things. So, here are 5 things that must happen in The Rise Of Skywalker, as well as 5 that really should not.

10 Must Connect All Three Trilogies

The ultimate goal of this film is—or at least should be—to bring a brilliant end to the Skywalker saga. This is a saga that has 40 years, and three trilogies under its belt and none of those trilogies can be ignored, they must be represented in this film.

Obviously, The Rise Of Skywalker is about the sequel trilogy heroes, and, as everyone knows, the Emperor, Luke, Chewie, and Leia are all in this film which, does connect it to the Original trilogy and arguably the Prequels. However, the three all must be tied up in this film as well as the fact the Prequels need more representation, or else the saga may feel unsatisfying if not incomplete.

9 Shouldn't Focus On Off-brand Humor

The runtime for The Rise Of Skywalker is around 2hrs 21mins according to J.J. Abrams. That is not the longest time, especially not to fit in forty years of a saga in.

Therefore the film simply can not afford to waste precious minutes on jokes that do not fit into Star Wars, especially when those minutes could be spent furthering characters and the story. For example, in The Last Jedi, despite all its positives, the humor tried a lot to be like an MCU film and a lot of it did not fit into Star Wars, whereas humor in the Originals, and even The Force Awakens, all fit well.

8 Side-Character Story Archs Must Have A Payoff

The three main stars of The Rise Of Skywalker, and rightfully so, are Rey, Kylo, and Palpatine. Their stories seem intertwined and will be the main arc of the film. But, that does not mean the supporting characters' stories and development must be ignored.

Finn and Poe are great characters who deserve to have their arcs and their own development to end the journey, and the same applies to the new characters, as well as Leia and Chewbacca. The first two prequels had some poor development for some of its characters and The Last Jedi, while it got the character development for Finn and Poe right, the sub-plot they went through to get it was ultimately pointless and the weakest parts of the film.

7 Shouldn't Have Pointless Sideplots

As mentioned above development for characters as well as good stories for them are needs for The Rise Of Skywalker, it must avoid though the aforementioned sub-plots that are pointless. Not only that, but the film needs to avoid doing any story within the film that goes nowhere.

If the film set something up it simply cannot afford to not pay it off, the script needs to be deliberate and airtight. If something is foreshadowed or an event is mentioned or conflict is brewing, it must all come to a head within the film, there is no time and too much at stake for the film to create stories and not follow through on them or have to end up pointless.

6 Must Have More Force Ghosts

It is basically confirmed that Luke Skywalker will appear in The Rise Of Skywalker in force ghost form. While that is fantastic and exciting, the force ghosts should not end there.

If the film does not have Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker, it is an immediate handicap for fan reception. To not have Anakin Skywalker, the key character in the Star Wars universe, in the final entry in his saga is nonsensical. On top of that, there also should be appearances from Yoda once again, and the return of Obi-Wan's force ghost which both will fit the story and the purpose the film has of tying up the saga.

5 Should Not Feature Another Planet-Killing Weapon

The planet killer trope in the Star Wars films is officially overdone, it was arguably a detriment to Return Of The Jedi, but, on top of that, it was once again brought back in the form of Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens.

The original Death Star in A New Hope was fantastic, but, to have a fourth version come up in this film would be lazy and would just come across as a rehash of Return Of The Jedi. If the Death Star technology is used, say in Star Destroyers or a less powerful weapon, that could be great, but J.J cannot waste a film focusing on Death Star IV.

4 Must Flesh Out Snoke And The Knights Of Ren

Two of the biggest questions coming out of The Force Awakens were "who is Snoke" and "who are the Knights Of Ren?" J.J finally has the chance to answer those questions.

The Last Jedi took a shocking route with Snoke, and now it is up to the director of Episode VII to explain his story as well as the story of the Knights of Ren. Fans know the Knights are in this film via trailers, so to not delve into who they are and their purpose makes no sense and would be bitterly disappointing.

3 Should Not Waste Kylo Ren

This is not a should, but rather a 100% cannot. Kylo Ren is the best part of the sequels, in terms of story, character, and performance, he is the undisputed best.

However, most fans believe he will have the same fate as Darth Vader, redemption and death. But the film cannot risk doing it in a repetitive, uninteresting, or unambitious way. It would be much more interesting if Kylo survived, or if he stayed bad, perhaps. Redemption and death is the most predictable option, but, no matter what happens to the young Solo, it must be well written and executed or the film risks leaving a bitter taste in the mouth.

2 Must Have High Stakes

Star Wars sometimes has a tendency of making things perhaps a bit too easy for its heroes, but, with the return of Emperor Palpatine, that cannot be the case here.

For not just Rey but for all our heroes, Finn, Poe, the Resistance, there must be stakes and struggle, perhaps through death, or perhaps capture of characters or even just overwhelming odds. On top of that, whatever the Emperor's plan is must be one that is executed to the point where fans genuinely believe he will win, otherwise there will be a lack of tension, and maybe even care from some fans, and will harm the story.

1 Cannot Have Rey Easily Kill Palpatine

If Rey and Palpatine get in a battle of lightsabers, or exchange of force powers, or come together in some way as Rey vs Palpatine one-on-one with no special circumstances, then Rey cannot win.

Not only does it waste the Emperor. but it also robs Anakin of his unbelievable arc while making Rey too powerful. If Rey defeats Palpatine with the help of perhaps Kylo, or the force ghosts or a combination of the two with perhaps some ancient artifact or power, that is obviously expected and okay... depending on the overall execution. But the film risks being ruined if she simply kills Palpatine completely by herself.
