How Many Films Has Tarantino Made (& Why Does He Count It Wrong)?

Just how many films has Quentin Tarantino really made? Tarantino has one more movie left according to his self-imposed, 10-film goal, but given his complete filmography, he may have already made more than nine movies. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has been billed as being Tarantino's ninth film, but in reality, it's his tenth.

Since 1987, Tarantino has directed a short film, a segment within a movie, and numerous feature films. He has also written several screenplays for movies he didn’t direct, and once served as a “guest director” for a sequence in a Robert Rodriguez film. So, what’s the deal? How many films has Tarantino officially made, taking everything into account?

According to Tarantino himself, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood marks his ninth movie, so there’s one more left to make before he retires. But that doesn't add up, since he's actually directed 10 feature films. Here's every movie that Tarantino counts on his list: Reservoir Dogs (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill (2003/2004), Death Proof (2007), Inglourious Basterds (2009), Django Unchained (2012), The Hateful Eight (2015), and the aforementioned Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). However, that only makes sense if you don't split Kill Bill.

From Tarantino’s perspective, Kill Bill is one collective movie; his fourth official directorial feature. But in reality, those were two separate releases - the first installment came out in 2003 with the second in 2004. Sure, it's all one story, but those are two films; the same way that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 and Part 2 are separate films. With that in mind, Tarantino's movie count would be at 10, and that's discounting his first movie ever (which ended up being a somewhat long short film): My Best Friend's Wedding (1987).

Of course, Tarantino may very well choose, artistically, to keep Kill Bill as one movie, but that doesn't disregard the fact that he's actually directed more than nine films, with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood being his tenth. What's more, Tarantino has done much more than just direct; he's also an accomplished screenwriter and actor, having written scripts for Tony Scott's True Romance (1993), Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers (1994), and Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk till Dawn (1996), as well as having helmed a segment - "The Man From Hollywood" - for the 1995 film Four Rooms.

Sure, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Tarantino's ninth movie, but that's only according to him; in actuality, he's made more than nine films. If Hollywood were to count all of his projects in which he's been behind the camera, then it's fair to say that he's made 11 movies, but short films aren't typically associated with theatrical releases.
