The San Diego Comic Con 2019 campaign for Warner Bros. to release the Snyder cut of Justice League has raised thousands for a suicide prevention charity. Released in 2017, the DCEU Justice League movie was a box office bomb and received a lukewarm reception from fans and critics, with many blaming the problems on behind-the-scenes changes and studio interference. Directed by Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman's Zack Snyder, Justice League had reached the post-production stage when Snyder stepped away from the project following the tragic passing of his daughter.
Joss Whedon stepped in to oversee the completion of Justice League, but extensive reshoots would follow, fundamentally altering the story and characters and giving Henry Cavill a widely-mocked digital shave. Since the theatrical release of Justice League landed, snippets of information from those involved in the movie's production have hinted at the changes made to Snyder's original vision. Fans have learned of a deeper story for Cyborg, a role for the hotly-anticipated Darkseid and an altered arc for Superman. Given Justice League's poor reception, there have been loud calls for Warner Bros. to release what is now officially known as the "Snyder cut" but the studio seemed to double down of their theatrical Justice League in their promotion of HBO Max.
At this year's SDCC event, a group of DC fans banded together to orchestrate a campaign calling for the Snyder cut's release, including a huge billboard and a banner that was flown over the event by plane. In addition to raising money for the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign itself, however, a considerable amount of money was also donated towards the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The Project Comic Con team has now posted a tweet confirming that a donation of $14,930.74 has been written out to the charity.
The merits of the Snyder cut campaign have been questioned by many, with Wikipedia event contemplating deleting the Snyder cut page, but the money raised through the project more than justifies their efforts. While DC fans may be desperate to see what Zack Snyder originally had in mind for Justice League, it's important never to lose sight of the real world issues people face on a daily basis, and the money raised by Project Comic Con will go on to help a great many individuals suffering problems related to mental health. Deborah Snyder herself has even commended the campaign's fundraising and expressed her heartfelt gratitude.
While the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign has yet to draw any sort of positive response from Warner Bros. with regards to a new release of the Justice League movie, those involved can take pride in the fact that they made a significant contribution to the ongoing fight for improved mental health.
