Supernatural: The Characters’ Death Counts, Ranked

Supernatural’s fifteenth season renewal would never have been possible had the show avoided taking the lives of its main characters. With the show featuring these characters going up against beings like the devil himself, there was no way they could walk away alive on every instance. As it happens, the show doesn’t exempt the main characters from dying and they’ve died quite a lot.

Death is such a regular occurrence, that here we have a list for the number of deaths for multiple characters. For this list, we’ve included alternate versions of the characters as well, and considered their ghost version’s ends as deaths as well.

11 Dean Winchester - 100+ Times

His “permanent” deaths might be those which you could count, but Dean’s actual number of deaths are impossible to calculate. Sam spent what seemed like a year or more reliving everyday where Gabriel took Dean’s life, and Dean’s deaths were in colourful ways like being mauled by a dog, falling in the bathtub, getting shot, getting crushed, and a whole lot of others we didn’t get to see.

Even deaths that didn’t occur in that episode are a sizable amount as Dean has been killed by Metatron, hunters, Azazel, Lucifer, and even by himself on more than one occasion. To top it all off, Dean took on the mantle of Death in a Season 6 episode; he’s definitely earned that title.

10 Sam Winchester - 8 Times

Sam has been killed more than Dean if you don’t count Dean’s deaths in the ‘Mystery Spot’ episode. He started out being killed by Jake in the Season 2 finale, but then has racked up seven more deaths since then.

Sam has had a target on his back by all the antagonists, and of those Anna Milton, Lucifer, Zachariah have been successful; he also died by being electrocuted by lightning, being mauled by vampires, causing his own death and literally jumping into Hell. And Sam wonders why Dean is so protective of him – his track record of staying alive isn’t all that good, is it?

9 Castiel - 6 Times

Castiel died so many times that God got tired of resurrecting him. His deaths were so frequent, that he died three times in three years upon first appearance. Castiel was blown apart by Raphael, Lucifer and Leviathans, and brought back by God each time.

After God got tired of that, Castiel’s next deaths were by a rogue reaper, Lucifer again, and an alternate Castiel was killed by Castiel himself. The main Castiel was brought back by Gadreel and Jack the fourth and fifth times, while the alternate Castiel was an evil version whom the main Castiel was glad to kill. Castiel’s resurrections irked the Shadow so much it made him its enemy number one.

8 Bobby Singer - 4 Times

It’s a shame Bobby hasn’t come back after Season 7, because he had a habit of coming back a lot previously as well. An alternate future Bobby met his end at the hands of Lucifer in 2014, while the main Bobby died also at Lucifer’s hands by having his neck snapped in 2010.

Castiel brought Bobby back, but the next time he wasn’t around as Dick Roman shot Bobby in the head, thereby causing him to become a ghost. The ghost version of Bobby would die too after having his flask burned and enabling him to move on from the world.

7 John Winchester - 3 Times

John was the first Winchester to bite the dust and he did so by inadvertently kickstarting the entire chain of events of the series. He died at the hands of Azazel in 1973, and was brought back after Mary made a deal with Azazel.

In the Apocalypse world version, John died in 1973 too, but was not resurrected on this occasion, making this version’s death permanent. In the main reality, John would again die by making a deal of his own with Azazel (what is with the Winchester parents making deals with Yellow-Eyes?) for Dean’s life. This death still hasn’t been averted, but John does have a notable death count.

6 Mary Winchester - 3 Times

Mary joins her husband in this list with three entries. The first instance is the most well-known as we saw her being burned alive in the Pilot episode. Mary’s second “death” counts as her spirit was vanquished from the world after she sacrificed herself to protect her sons in a Season 1 episode.

Her final death so far has been the alternate Mary Campbell from the Apocalypse world, who met her death at the alternate Azazel’s hands years down the line after turning down Azazel’s offer to resurrect John. Considering how most of the fandom finds Mary boring and unneeded, most won’t complain if a fourth instance of her death enters this list soon.

5 Zachariah - 3 Times

Zachariah quickly became the angel everyone loved to hate, but also hated to love as well. He would get what was coming to him a total of three time, which includes his alternate self. The main version of Zachariah, who antagonized Dean more than anyone else, was killed fittingly by Dean as the elder Winchester sibling drove an angel blade straight through Zachariah’s thick skull.

The alternate Zachariah – the one devoid of the charm the main universe’s Zachariah had – was effortlessly exploded by Jack in the Apocalypse World. Another alternate Zachariah from 2003 was stabbed by Sam in Season 14. Whatever version, Zachariah’s affinity for monologuing has always been his doom.

4 Charlie Bradbury - 2.5 Times

For someone who’s not even a hunter, Charlie sure has tasted death quite a lot. She would meet her end three times before being taken out for good and paving the way for the alternate Charlie from the Apocalypse world.

The first instance was when she was killed in the bunker and resurrected by Gadreel; the next time, she was separated in two halves, the second of whom was killed when she was combined with the good half. Finally, she was permanently killed off when she was taken out by a member of the Styne family, thereby kickstarting Dean’s turn for the worst as the Mark of Cain consumed him with vengeance.

3 Crowley - 2 Times

A whole lot of characters have been killed twice, but since out of all these characters the most interesting and beloved was Crowley, we’ve chosen him to be on this list. While he does have two official deaths, the first one of these has only been spoken of.

Crowley died as a human after the deal he made for himself ran out and he went to Hell. The second instance is clearer to remember as Crowley himself was responsible for ending his life. He would stab himself with an angel blade after getting tired of his life, and to assist the Winchesters. Who knew the King of Hell could ever have gone out nobly?

2 Adam Milligan - 2 Times

Rounding out all of the Winchester clan (although Adam used his mother’s surname) is the youngest son of John Winchester. The tragedy of Adam is that both times he didn’t ask for his death; then again, his birth was by accident as well.

Adam was brutally killed – eaten actually – by ghouls before his first official appearance after he was resurrected. His second death is truly tragic, as Adam went to Hell in Lucifer’s Cage and has remained there permanently. In Hell years, Adam has been in the Cage for thousands of years now, and there’s no signs of him returning.

1 Rowena - 2 Times

Not one to be left behind, Rowena accompanies her son’s number of two deaths, although her two instances were nothing to envy. She was killed by Lucifer both times, with the differences in them being how terrifyingly Lucifer finished her the second time.

Lucifer instantly snapped her neck on the first occasion, not bothering with her for too long, but the second time she died by his hands included him “stomping on her face till the white meat showed and setting her on fire”. It definitely was overkill, but Lucifer took his time being “messy”, and liked it a lot. We could say she technically has three deaths as her future death at the hands of Sam is locked in.
